Summer League Party
this Saturday, August 4th, at the
Lincoln Park Pub. There will be a cups tournament
at 4pm (at the park), and at the same time (in the bar) free drinks will be served.
At 6:30, the tournament should be over, and free food is served at the bar. Then the
celebration can progress into the wee hours. Come see all the people that you can't
see every week with these dratted split fields. Free food, drinks, and prizes (including
Indians Tickets)! See you there!
What? Where? When? Oh....
Summer league started last week, 6/14. The schedule and directions to the
Lower Fields are now up. If you're not registered, registration will be at the
Hawken Upper School.
We'll hand out shirts and discs, you'll get a schedule, and then can go find your
team It should run from 6pm to dark.
Still some space
in the Summer League. Registration will be extended thru opening day.
Cost is now $35 American. If you're itching to play come to some pickup,
detailed to the left!
Summer League
is the answer to your prayers. A fantastic social environment that
is the best way to learn this great sport, Cleveland's Summer League
has run for more than ten years. Last year there were 16 teams, with
some 400 people. This year, we expect 20 teams. If you're new to the
sport, have no fear, this is where you want to be. Most teams have 3-4
people new to the game, time is taken to teach people to play, and play
together. Come and learn to love Ultimate! Thursdays ~6:30pm,
at the Hawken Upper School. More info
available from the forms.
Artwork Selected!
The big hairy deal about the shirt & disc designs is over. A winner
has been chosen. Congratulate Jason Godlaski, his design will grace
both disc and shirt. yippee. These should be posted shortly. High
praise to all entrants, the field this year was outstanding.
Brr, it's cold.
Must be the draft. Yeah, that's right, we're having a draft this year. Firstly, with
expansion, we'll be needing more captains. This year, you have a great chance to put
together a team of you and yer bestest pals, due to this draft thingy. The details look
like this: 2 captains (1M, 1F), and two reserved players from last year's team. Also,
the rookie clause allows you to keep any rookies captains recruit themselves (altho
this will limit the number of draft rounds you get to participate in). New (expansion)
teams will then get their pick of two players, immediately. Then we run, round by round,
until everyone has a team. Don't worry, it'll all work out. Contact
us if you'd like to captain a team (it's not so tough;
run a drill, teach some throws, make sure everyone gets some PT).
The Skinny
from the cover letter mailed to previous players:
It's that time of year again, and we hope you're as eager as we are to kick off this
year's summer Ultimate season. This year there's been some struggle getting fields.
Hawken, our home for the last few years, is renovating their varsity soccer field. We
pursued the fields used by the Eastern Suburbs Rugby Football Club at the Cuyahoga
County Airport, but they didn't work out for this year. In the subsequent scramble,
we came to this arrangement: we'll use Hawken Upper and Hawken Lower School fields.
These are their Gates Mills and Lyndhurst campuses, respectively, and you'll find
directions to them included. While we are loath to split the league in any way, we
were backed into a corner this year. Our effort to find an equidistant sponsor where
we can all meet and take part in the best social Ultimate scene in the tri-state area
is now underway.
We'll be running on Thursdays again, as that is the only scheduling we were able to
obtain. This year we begin June 14th, and run 10 weeks until August 16th. Our
tournament date is not yet set, nor the mid-season party, but rest assured they'll
happen (mid-August and mid-July respectively).
All waiver signing and shirt pickups, etc. will happen Week One, at Hawken Upper.
We will scrimmage that week, on only those fields. If you miss week one, all sign-up
activities will happen at the Upper School again.
Register online (http://www.cleveland-disc.org/league/summer/2001/reg.html) or send in
the included form and waiver. Then pay, either by mailing a check or by using Paypal
(http://www.paypal.com) to send money to this address: money@cleveland-disc.org. On
opening day you will have to stand in line to pick up your shirt & disc (and sign a
waiver if you've filled out your form online), but with no opening day paying, that
line should fly!!
What's that? No opening day registration? What's the deal? This year we're drafting,
which means we need everyone signed up first. So, pay by May 18th, it's $25, then
until May 31st, it's $30. Remember, that chump-change buys you ten (10) weeks of
Ultimate, a mid-season party, and a tournament, as well as a disc and shirt. After
that, if the league isn't full, we will allow the disorganized to register, however
it'll cost $35, and they'll enter the league late and be placed as needed.
So what's this about a draft, you ask? Well, this is an effort to alleviate the weeks
of gerrymandering the organizer types have to do, that ends up with questionable parity
and friends split to different teams. Additionally, we'll be expanding to 20 teams, to
help the population crunch; the draft will help create those teams. We will be putting
newcomers with whoever recruited them, so they should be able to play with friends.
Additionally, anyone who puts down a friends name, and that friend puts yours, will
be drafted together. Finally, what we think will really make this system work, is
current captains will get rosters from last year, to help them draft as many of their
players back as they can. We don't expect this to be a cut-throat process, just as fun
and competitive as Summer League itself. You'll most likely end up with your friends. A
nd, as always, if things work out differently for you, you'll have a great opportunity
to expand your Ultimate social circles and meet some great people. :)
Feel free to copy the flyer and registration form included, and give them to your bestest
pals. For other information on ultimate and disc sports in the Cleveland area,
