This article answers ALL your questions about the Draft League

Because of the endless number of emails I have been getting over the last couple weeks, it is obvious that there are a number of questions about Summer League. I know it’s a lot of information, but the system (and the website) are new and we want to make sure everyone is happy and informed. Thanks for bearing with us. (click on read more for all the info)

Players: Per my many posts and emails, the league registration closes Sunday. We will be shutting down the registration page first thing Monday morning. If for some reason you cannot register by then, you can only register by sending me an email (jefflazarus@hotmail.com), and you must include, last name, first name, gender, email address, address, phone #, years experience. Also, remember this: the cost is $75.00 AND you will NOT be guaranteed a jersey, a disc, and will have no choice in what team you are placed on. You can join up until the day the season starts (June 3), but I would not recommend it.

If you haven’t signed up yet, get on it, tell your friends. And remember, everyone must register online to play. Just because you list someone as baggage, that’s not enough, they must sign up too. The draft is May 21st. A couple days after the draft, you will get an email (from me) letting you know who your captain is, their email address, and what team you are on.

To pay, you can either pay through paypal when you sign up, or can choose to "pay later". This can be done in one of two ways: 1. Bring cash or a check (made out to "Cleveland Disc Association") the first week of the season.  2. You can mail payment to our P.O. Box: Cleveland Disc Association  P.O. Box 18552  Cleveland Heights, Ohio 44118. However, if you don't mail payment in by May 30th, just bring the money to Week 1, because we need the money to be received by the first game for you to play.

Also, you will get a copy of the liability waiver. In order to play, you must sign this and bring it the first day of the season. If you are under 18, your parent MUST sign before you play. No exceptions.

The draft league will be every Wednesday night, from June 3-August 5, with the End of the Year tournament on Saturday, August 8th.

We have two field sites this year. First, at Hawken Upper School (as always), 12734 County Line Rd, in Chesterland and secondly at North Olmsted, 30300 Barton Road. All teams will have games at each of the fields, about half at each site. Games start at 6:30pm.

You will get a schedule a few days after the draft.

Also, all players will get a disc and a jersey this year. You can check out the styles of jerseys at www.vcultimate.com. However, because we are making sure everyone gets the jersey size with the right color, jerseys will not be available until the Second week (June 10). So, in Week 1, bring a light shirt and a dark shirt.

As far as the draft league, here is what the captains need to know:

Captains, you will be getting an email on Monday morning with 2 major pieces of info.

First, you will get a list of all the other potential captains, and if you want, you can pick a co-captain. Depending on the number of teams and captains, you may be forced to have a co-captain.

Second, you will get two lists of all players registered for the draft. One list will have all men and all women sorted by Last name. The second list will have men and female sorted by their skills, which is from the three categories on the sign-up page.

These lists will allow you to do a little homework before you draft your team.

Captains, here is the deal on the draft, and the players you have before the draft.

The draft is on Thursday, May 21st, at Bar Louie at Legacy Village (on Cedar Road in Lyndhurst, right off Cedar and 271). Be there at 6:30 sharp. We will have a projector and will do everything through one computer. All captains are required to be there, but if there is a situation and you can not be there, you must email me to send someone in your place.

If you want, you can have up to six players (including yourself) on the team before the draft starts. This is all voluntary, you don’t have to do this if you are a captain. To have the maximum of 6 players on your team before the draft, here’s what you do. I’m gonna use an example, Alex, Ben, Chuck, David, Eddie, and Frank are the six players in this example. Alex and Ben are both captains of the team, both must register online. Alex must list Chuck as "baggage" when signing up, and Chuck must list Alex as baggage when signing up. Also the other co-captain Ben must list David as baggage, and vice-versa. That is all done before the draft.

Then, at the draft, before picks are made, a team can choose to "retain" up to two players. If Alex or Ben were a captain last year, they can "retain" Eddie and Frank ONLY IF Eddie and Frank were on their team last year. You will not also get Eddie and Frank’s baggage.

After that is all done, each team will pick jerseys colors and be given a draft order. Then, the drafting begins. Each team will have 30 seconds to make a pick. Assuming there are 12 teams. Team 1 picks first, all the way to Team 12, then in the second round, Team 12 picks first, and you go backwards. We go like that until all players are picked.

Remember, if you start the draft with the 6 player max, those are your first six picks. So if John’s team starts with the max (6), but Bob’s team does not retain any players or use baggage and only has two captains, then they will get 4 picks before John’s team picks. Get it?

Also, remember that the league is 5:2 male to female ratio, so draft women wisely!

I hope this helps you all, email me with any questions.
